A psychiatric evaluation (also called a psychiatric assessment or initial psychiatric interview) is a thorough, confidential conversation and assessment. It typically lasts 45–90 minutes and serves as the foundational first step in understanding your mental health needs.
What It Involves
During the evaluation, our clinician gathers information through open discussion, including:
Your current symptoms and concerns
When and how they started
How they affect daily life, work, relationships, and sleep/mood/energy
Personal and family medical/psychiatric history
Any medications, substance use, or physical health factors
A brief mental status exam (observing things like mood, thought patterns, memory, and insight)
It's collaborative and non-judgmental—like a detailed mental health check-up.
What It's For
The primary purposes are to:
Accurately identify any mental health conditions (such as depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or others)
Understand underlying causes and contributing factors (biological, psychological, social, or environmental)
Develop a personalized treatment plan, which may include therapy recommendations, medication (if appropriate), lifestyle changes, or referrals
It's not about labeling or judging—it's about gaining clarity, reducing suffering, and creating a clear path toward feeling better and functioning more effectively. Many people find it relieving to finally have their experiences heard and explained. If you're preparing for one, there's no "right" way to prepare—just come as you are and be as open as feels comfortable. Treatment and support options are available based on what the evaluation reveals.
